Maria Droste

June 16th, 2007

So now how do I even begin on today? I woke up really bummed out, and I could not bring myself to go to my own work at the orphanage today. My heart was not there, so I decided I’d find Brittany and go with her. She teaches English to prostitutes at some Catholic place with nuns that teach new trades to help them earn money by other means. Brittany cannot speak Spanish hardly at all, so I took over. The women did not want to leave.

So I am now a teacher at this place. I don’t even know how to get there! We made due with the bare essentials we had: a notebook we purchased prior to working, and a piece of pink and white chalk. I needed better materials. I was all hyped up, thinking of ideas and what to teach these women. How do you teach your own language? Teaching is an art in itself… a complicated art at that. I really didn’t even think much about these women’s profession. They make $10 for every man that they have sex with, and sometimes have up to 50 clients a day! One woman brought her child with her to the class, and wanted so desperately for me to work with her 8 year old daughter on pronunciation.

It seems so simple, but it really is all so complicated. Maybe it is just so hard, because this is beyond what I ever imagined myself doing. I am teaching whores of all ages how to speak my language. Where do you even begin to do such a thing? They have such a hunger to learn though. They have just been pushed into the corner of this profession out of necessity—for money. They are no different than anyone else, just desperate to get by. It leads a decent indecent life, if that makes any sense at all.

Now I'm in the front, left.

Me and some of the kids that started coming.

What leads a woman to do such a thing? For some, their dignity is all that they have. Not even sex can take all of a woman’s dignity though, for they are the utmost of those sacrificing. They sell their bodies to give to their families and provide a life above the streets.
